Retired Utica Police Sgt. George R. Freeman 76, of Whitesboro, NY passed away May 14, 2014 at the Presbyterian Home after a long illness with his loving family by his side. George was born May 4, 1938 in Abbeville, AL, son of the late Burnie and Martha Bell-Freeman.
George was a graduate of the Henry County Training School in Abbeville, AL. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959; later serving in the U.S. Army Reserves for 20 years as a Staff Sergeant. Employed by GE until joining the Utica Police Department in 1969, where he served until retiring in 2004. George also worked part time for the Utica School District for over 30 years as a Security Officer. He was an active member of Hope Chapel AME Zion Church.
George is survived by his wife Althera Johnson-Freeman; daughters Pamela and Karen and stepson Michael; along with 13 grandchildren 10 great grandchildren; siblings; James Merle (Lucille), Maryanne, Mamie (Richard), Blessie (Emory), Alberta (Carl), Larry (Georgia) and Benjamin (Alicia), and a host of other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by brothers: James Robert, Burnie and Sam; sisters Doretha and Carrie.
The family extends thanks to Dr. Daniel Goodman, Dr. Wassel, Dr. Bramley, Dr. Goldner, NP Diane Hilton and the staff at Faxton-St. Lukes CCU and Emergency Dept, the Presbyterian Home Birch Unit and Bertha Nugent CNA.
Friends may call on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, from 5pm to 7 pm at T. Revels-Gibson Funeral Chapel, 144 Eagle St., Utica. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at 11 am, St. Paul's Baptist Church 219 Leah St., Utica.
