Obituary of Freddie James Horstead
Freddie James “Brother” Horstead, 79 of Utica, NY went home to be with the Lord on Friday, August 16, 2019 with his loved ones with him.
Freddie was born on January 30, 1940 in Elba, Alabama to Alto and Effie (McGrady) Horstead. Raised and educated in Alabama, he relocated to Utica, NY to join his family in 1969. Upon his relocation, he became employed by MDS Corporation and upon their closure became employed and retired by Momentum Technology in Herkimer, NY.
Freddie married Eva Mae (Caldwell) Horstead, from Elba, Alabama and later married Dorothy Ash of Utica, NY. From that union was a daughter, Nicole Collette Strickland. Being a friend to all – whenever one was in need, there he was. His passion of woodwork was shown in the furniture – sheds – desks that he designed; he would make something out of nothing. Cars…. that was his forte – he was consistently working on his vehicles and when he wasn’t working on his cars, he was spending time with his family: fishing, cookouts and family gatherings. Freddie was also a long-time member of Friendship Baptist Church.
Freddie leaves to celebrate his life: his daughter, Nicole Collette Strickland; his sister: Reverend Dr. Mary Webster; sister-in-law Ethel Horstead; longtime companion Marva Adams; grandchildren: Cornell Strickland, Marquise Strickland, Elijanee Strickland and Kenia Strickland (all of Troy, NY).
Freddie is predeceased by his parents: Alto and Effie Horstead; brothers Leavy Horstead and Walter Horstead; sisters Annie Choice, Bertha Williams and wife Dorothy (Ash) Horstead.
Services will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Friendship Baptist Church, 1004 Albany Street, Utica, NY 13501. Viewing and receiving line will be from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm and service will immediately follow at 12:00 pm.
